Teradata to Databricks: what are the options?
Databricks routes Teradata SQL through Lakebridge’s BladeBridge converter, and Genie Migrate also lists Teradata as a source. Databricks’ Teradata migration guide says BTEQ and the load utilities are rewritten as SQL or PySpark, with its converter run by Databricks Professional Services or a partner. Partner tools and Novuz take the BTEQ control flow, macros and proof. Here are the facts, from each vendor’s published material.
Side by side
How do the Teradata to Databricks routes differ?
| Lakebridge | Genie Migrate | Partner tools (Next Pathway SHIFT, LeapLogic) | Novuz | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | BladeBridge converter, recommended by Databricks for Teradata; Switch, which uses a language model, is experimental | An agent in the Databricks workspace converts files, then revises and rechecks them | Vendor translation platforms with planning and testing products | Fixed, versioned rules convert about 95% of objects; a resolver handles the rest, with engineer approval |
| Teradata SQL and procedures | Converted by BladeBridge | Teradata SQL to Databricks SQL, or notebooks (Beta) | Next Pathway translates Teradata SQL and procedures to Databricks; LeapLogic shows Teradata to Databricks | Converted by rule |
| BTEQ and load utilities | Not listed in the Lakebridge docs; Databricks’ migration guide says they are rewritten as SQL or PySpark | Not listed | Next Pathway lists BTEQ scripts; load utilities not listed | BTEQ control flow converted by rule into notebook logic, each script reconciled |
| Macros | The Databricks guide maps them to SQL functions | Not listed | See vendor documentation | Converted by rule |
| Equivalence evidence | Reconcile compares named tables; Teradata needs a hash function installed for row checks | Checks syntax and semantic intent; Databricks recommends comparing results on test data | Next Pathway Tester; LeapLogic schema, record and aggregate validation | A reconciliation report for every object; typically above 95% on first pass |
| Where it runs | Your Databricks environment | Your Databricks workspace; up to 500 files per run | See vendor documentation | Inside your environment, as a Docker container or VM |
| Price | Free; Switch incurs model token costs | Not stated | Not published | Fixed price per scope after a $3,000 assessment |

When to choose
Which Teradata to Databricks route should I choose?
- Run Lakebridge’s analyzer and converter first on the Teradata SQL. Both are free.
- Plan the BTEQ scripts and load utilities separately: the Databricks guide treats them as a rewrite.
- Choose a partner tool if the program also covers Informatica, DataStage, SAS or several targets.
- Choose Novuz if BTEQ control flow and macros carry the business rules, or if you need a fixed price and a reconciliation report for every object.
- Bottom line: the SQL is the easy part; price the BTEQ, the macros and the proof before you approve a plan.

Four pillars
What Novuz gives you that the other routes do not
Test any route against these four, ours included. Each one comes with a proof you can check yourself.
Deterministic
The same code in gives the same code out. About 95% of objects convert by fixed, versioned rules with no model calls. The rest go to the resolver, and an engineer approves every proposal.
Proof: Convert twice and diff the output. The diff is empty.
Proven
Every object ships with a reconciliation report. Schema, row counts and column-level values are compared against the original on the same inputs. Pass, fail or review, per object.
Proof: Reconciliation above 95% on first pass, typically.
Agentically primed
Agents can run Novuz through its APIs, and your agents can run the pipelines Novuz delivers through MCP. The conversion in between stays deterministic.
Proof: Conversion by rules, agents around it. No model in the conversion path.
Inside your walls
Runs as a container or VM in your cloud or your data center. Code, data, lineage and the resolver’s knowledge base stay with you. Works air-gapped.
Proof: No outbound connection required. Fixed price set before work starts.
Bottom line. Translation is the easy part. A comparison is worth making when the other route can show you the same output twice, a report for every object, agents around the conversion and code that never leaves your walls. If it cannot, that is what Novuz is for.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What tools migrate Teradata to Databricks?
Databricks’ free Lakebridge converts Teradata SQL through BladeBridge, and Genie Migrate lists Teradata as a source. Partner tools include Next Pathway SHIFT and LeapLogic. Novuz converts Teradata SQL, BTEQ control flow and macros by fixed rules, with a reconciliation report for every object.
Does Lakebridge convert BTEQ?
The Lakebridge documentation does not list BTEQ. Databricks’ Teradata migration guide says BTEQ scripts and the FastLoad, MultiLoad and TPT utilities are rewritten as SQL or PySpark, with help from its converter.
Can we run Teradata SQL on Databricks without converting it?
Datometry announced Hyper-Q for Databricks in 2023, translating Teradata SQL at run time. Datometry now ships its Teradata product for Snowflake, so confirm current Databricks availability with the vendor before planning on it.
How long does a Teradata to Databricks migration take?
It depends on the BTEQ and procedure count, not the terabytes. On delivered estates of 1,000 to 1,600 objects, Novuz typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from kickoff to reconciled output.
