Free migration tools: what they convert, and what they leave

Each platform now gives away a converter for moving onto it. They are a good start for SQL translation to their own platform, and most estates should run one first. What they leave is the procedural logic, the ETL packages, the schedules, and the proof that the result matches.

How they work

How do platform-native migration tools work?

Each tool targets its own platform.

  • Databricks Lakebridge: an assessment (a profiler and an analyzer); three transpilers, Morpheus, BladeBridge and Switch, which uses a language model and is listed as experimental; and Reconcile, for table-level comparison.
  • Snowflake SnowConvert AI: converts many sources to Snowflake SQL. It flags what it cannot convert as messages, and its AI Code Conversion fixes some of those for SQL Server and Redshift.
  • Microsoft, for SSIS to Fabric: three routes. Run packages with the Invoke SSIS Package activity, which is in preview; keep them on the Azure-SSIS integration runtime; or rebuild them as Fabric pipelines.

What they leave

What do the free tools usually not cover?

Read each tool’s current documentation for the exact list, because it changes every release. On 2 November 2026:

  • SSIS conversion is listed as experimental in Lakebridge, and as dbt projects with limitations in SnowConvert AI.
  • Teradata BTEQ control flow and SQL Agent schedules are not listed in Lakebridge.
  • No tool produces a report per converted object on the same inputs.
  • Each tool converts to one platform.

Enough?

Is the free converter enough, or do we need a paid tool?

It is enough when the estate is mostly SQL, the target is that platform, and the team can test the result by hand. Look at a product when:

  • procedures, packages or schedules carry the business rules;
  • a second target is possible;
  • an auditor or finance team must sign off object by object.

In sequence

Should we run the free converter first and bring a paid tool for the remainder?

Often, yes. Run it on the SQL it handles well. Bring the rest to a tool that converts procedures, packages and schedules and reconciles every object, including the ones the free tool converted. The Novuz assessment tells you which objects to send where.

Schema tools

Are AWS SCT or Microsoft SSMA enough for the schema?

They are schema and code converters for their own targets. AWS SCT converts toward AWS database and warehouse services, and Microsoft’s SSMA migrates other databases into SQL Server and Azure SQL. Check each tool’s current target list before relying on it for Databricks, Fabric or Snowflake. Schema is rarely the hard part: the logic in procedures and packages is.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Lakebridge free?

Yes. Lakebridge is free from Databricks Labs. It includes an assessment, three transpilers and a Reconcile module for table-level comparison. It targets Databricks only.

Is SnowConvert AI free?

Yes. SnowConvert AI is free for everyone, with full conversion functionality, and Snowflake offers professional services on request. It targets Snowflake only.

Why would we pay for conversion if the platform’s tool is free?

Pay only for what the free tool leaves: the procedures, packages and schedules it does not convert, other targets, and proof per object. The assessment prices exactly that remainder in three business days, for $3,000, credited.

Can we keep using the free tool alongside Novuz?

Yes. Many teams keep the free tool for the SQL it converts well. The assessment tells you which objects to send where, and the reconciliation report covers both sets.
