Hadoop to Databricks: what are the options?
Databricks has no free converter for Hive or Impala: Lakebridge’s analyzer scans Hive, Impala and Oozie, but its transpilers do not list them, and Genie Migrate does not list Hive. Databricks’ Hadoop guidance treats the move as a rebuild, with Oozie replaced by Databricks Jobs. Partner tools and Novuz convert. Here are the facts, from each vendor’s published material.
Side by side
How do the Hadoop to Databricks routes differ?
| Lakebridge | Rebuild, on Databricks’ guidance | Partner tools (Next Pathway SHIFT, LeapLogic) | Novuz | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hive and Impala SQL | The analyzer scans them; the transpilers do not list them | Impala maps to Databricks SQL and Photon; Hive tables move through the metastore | SHIFT lists Hive and Spark as sources; LeapLogic has a Hadoop to Databricks offer | Converted by rule, with the scripts around them |
| Orchestration (Oozie) | The analyzer scans Oozie; no conversion listed | Replaced by Databricks Jobs, Airflow or Azure Data Factory; no converter | See vendor documentation | Rebuilt as Databricks Workflows with the original dependencies |
| Spark code | Switch, experimental, accepts PySpark | Runs with small changes, such as getOrCreate for the session | SHIFT lists Spark | Assessed case by case and stated plainly |
| Equivalence evidence | Reconcile does not list Hive as a source | The tests your team writes | Next Pathway Tester; LeapLogic validation | A reconciliation report for every object |
| Price | Free | Engineer time | Not published | Fixed price per scope after a $3,000 assessment |

An object counts as automated only if it needs no manual edit, and a one-line fix counts as manual.
When to choose
Which Hadoop to Databricks route should I choose?
- Run Lakebridge’s analyzer first to count the Hive, Impala and Oozie estate. It is free.
- Rebuild by hand if most of the logic is already Spark code; that is a re-platform, not a conversion.
- Choose a partner tool or Novuz if the business runs on Hive and Impala queries and Oozie workflows that nobody owns.
- Choose Novuz if you need a fixed price and a reconciliation report for every object before the decommission date.
- Bottom line: copying HDFS data is solved; the Hive logic and the orchestration are what the date depends on.

Four pillars
What Novuz gives you that the other routes do not
Test any route against these four, ours included. Each one comes with a proof you can check yourself.
Deterministic
The same code in gives the same code out. About 95% of objects convert by fixed, versioned rules with no model calls. The rest go to the resolver, and an engineer approves every proposal.
Proof: Convert twice and diff the output. The diff is empty.
Proven
Every object ships with a reconciliation report. Schema, row counts and column-level values are compared against the original on the same inputs. Pass, fail or review, per object.
Proof: Reconciliation above 95% on first pass, typically.
Agentically primed
Agents can run Novuz through its APIs, and your agents can run the pipelines Novuz delivers through MCP. The conversion in between stays deterministic.
Proof: Conversion by rules, agents around it. No model in the conversion path.
Inside your walls
Runs as a container or VM in your cloud or your data center. Code, data, lineage and the resolver’s knowledge base stay with you. Works air-gapped.
Proof: No outbound connection required. Fixed price set before work starts.
Bottom line. Translation is the easy part. A comparison is worth making when the other route can show you the same output twice, a report for every object, agents around the conversion and code that never leaves your walls. If it cannot, that is what Novuz is for.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What tools migrate Hadoop to Databricks?
Databricks’ Lakebridge analyzer counts the Hive, Impala and Oozie estate, but its converters do not list Hive or Impala. Databricks’ Hadoop guidance treats the move as a rebuild. Next Pathway SHIFT and LeapLogic offer conversion, and Novuz converts Hive and Impala by fixed rules with a reconciliation report for every object.
What happens to Oozie workflows on Databricks?
Databricks’ Hadoop guidance replaces Oozie with Databricks Jobs, Airflow or Azure Data Factory, rebuilt by hand. Novuz rebuilds them as Databricks Workflows with the original dependencies.
Does Databricks convert Hive queries automatically?
Not with its free tools today. Lakebridge’s analyzer scans Hive, but its transpilers do not list it, and Genie Migrate does not list Hive among its sources.
