Data warehouse migration effort estimator
Enter your object counts and get an effort estimate from a published method: the size tier, the complexity of the mix, and the weeks to reconciled output. Every weight and table is on this page, so you can check the arithmetic.
Your estate
The estimate
- Objects
- 4,750
- Size tier
- Medium
- Weighted average per object
- 19.2 (Simple)
- Weeks to reconciled output
- about 15
- Published price range for the tier
- $40k to $80k
- Published duration for the tier
- 8 to 12 weeks
Conversion about 12.6 weeks (documentation factor 1.2), validation 1 week, data about 0.4 weeks. An estimate from published tables, not a quote: the assessment counts your real objects and removes dead code first.
The method
How the estimate is calculated
The same method as the Logic Debt Scorecard, with your exact counts in place of ranges.
| Step | Rule |
|---|---|
| 1. Weight each object type | Tables 2, views and functions 8, stored procedures and scripts 25, ETL packages and scheduled jobs 70 |
| 2. Complexity of the mix | Weighted average per object: 21 or under is Simple, 51 or under is Medium, above is Complex |
| 3. Size tier | Under 1,500 objects Small, under 5,000 Medium, under 10,000 Large, above X-Large, as on the pricing page |
| 4. Conversion weeks | One week, plus 0.003 weeks per object up to 1,500, then 0.00154 to 5,000, 0.00144 to 10,000, 0.00048 to 25,000 and 0.000216 beyond, times the documentation factor (1.0 to 1.3) |
| 5. Validation and data | One week of validation gates; data at 0.01 weeks per TB to 100 TB, 0.004 to 1,000, 0.0012 to 10,000 and 0.0004 beyond, capped at 10 weeks |
| 6. Total | Conversion plus validation plus data, rounded up; your functional testing runs alongside |
The ladder
From the estimate to a fixed price
- The estimate: free, here, in a minute.
- Convert 10: ten of your objects converted and reconciled in 24 hours, free, under NDA.
- The estate assessment: every object counted and banded, dead code listed, a fixed price in three business days, for $3,000, credited.
- The First Domain: one domain converted, reconciled and cutover-ready in 5 to 6 weeks, with the equivalence guarantee.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do we estimate the effort to migrate 3,000 stored procedures?
Count the objects by type, weight each type by the work it carries (tables 2, views and functions 8, stored procedures 25, ETL packages and jobs 70), and adjust for documentation. With deterministic conversion, 3,000 procedures alone land in the Medium tier, about 12 to 13 weeks to reconciled output. The assessment replaces the estimate with a fixed price.
How accurate is the effort estimator?
It is an estimate from published tables, not a quote. It uses the same method and constants as the Logic Debt Scorecard. The estate assessment counts every object in your code, finds dead code and bands each object by complexity, then fixes the price in three business days.
Why weight stored procedures and ETL packages more than tables?
Because that is where the work is. A table is mostly a schema; a procedure or package carries control flow, business rules and side effects that must be converted and proven. The weights reflect the relative effort per object on delivered estates.
Does the estimate include dead code?
Only if you count it. Most estates carry objects with no caller, no schedule and no reads. The assessment lists them with evidence so they come out of the count before anyone prices the work.
What does the estimate not include?
Your own functional testing, which runs alongside conversion, and the target platform design, data movement tooling and change management, which are priced by whoever does them. The weeks are to reconciled output.
